BACON LEADS AMERICAN CHALLENGE
By Dennis Newlyn
OKLAHOMA’S Brady Bacon is no egg when it comes to driving a Midget-Speedcar at high speed around a speedway circuit.
Bacon and another three Americans – Rico Abreu (California), Zach Daum (Illinois) and Andrew Felker (Missouri) – have arrived in Lismore to prepare for the final two rounds of the 2017 World Midget on January 26 and 28 at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway.
Bacon, who turns 27 on January 26, is a legitimate American Champion after an extremely successful season racing with the United States Auto Club.
In 2016 he was crowned USAC National Sprintcar Champion for the third time in three years following his initial success in 2014.
He is an extremely versatile driver who also had a big season in USAC Midget Car racing and finished third in the final national championship standings. He also drove the bigger Silver Crown cars and was tenth overall in final title points.
Promoter David Lander says Bacon has what it takes to go on to even greater things in America in future years.
“He is a talent there’s no doubt about that and he knows how to win races. He is one of the best Midget-Speedcar drivers America has produced over the past 30 years and I am confident he will put on a show for us at Lismore,” Lander said yesterday.
Meanwhile 25 year old Zach Daum, driving for Sydney’s Graham Racing Development team, already has won in Australia this season after he took out the 2016 Magic Man 34 at Perth Motorplex.
In America, Daum competes in the high profile Performance Open Wheel Racing Incorporated (POWRi) series. It’s a season-long championship trail with races from coast to coast and in 2016 he was crowned POWRi National Champion.
Arbeu took out the 2014 United States Auto Club National Championship and recorded back-to-back wins (2015- 2016) in America’s prestigious Chili Bowl Indoor Midget Nationals, while Felker was the 2012 POWRi American Champion. Felker turned in another strong US season last year and finished sixth in the final POWRi American Championship standings.
The four high ranking Americans will take on the best Midget-Speedcar drivers from Australia and New Zealand.
Gates for the Australia Day Speedway Spectacular, which will feature a massive fireworks dislay, will open at 3PM and racing commences at 6.
