DAYLIGHT ACTION TO ROUND OUT SPEEDWAY SEASON

BY DENNIS NEWLYN

TWO race meetings remain for the 2016-17 season at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway and both will be daylight fixtures.

The next race date on the schedule will be Sunday, June 4 commencing at 1PM, while the season finale will be held the following Sunday, June 11 also with a 1PM start.

The June 4 fixture is the postponed show from Saturday, May 13, after heavy rain washed out the meeting.

Promoter David Lander made the decision to use all the categories that were originally set to compete on May 13.

The meeting will also represent the season finale for the spectacular, wheel hiking V8 Dirt Modifieds.

Other race car divisions listed for action are: Junior Sedans, Wingless Sprints, Production Sedans, Street Stocks, National Four Cylinder Sedans and AMCA Nationals.

If the entry lists for the originally scheduled May 13 date serves as a guide, then all major categories will be supported with a high number of nominations anticipated.

Both daylight meetings are legacy of a season marred by inclement weather that has forced the cancellation or postponement of race nights.

These two daylight meetings also fall within the boundaries of the specified number of speedway fixtures allowed by Lismore City Council over a season.

“I hope these two daylight dates make up for the disappointment experienced by fans and competitors when shows have been rained out,” promoter David Lander said yesterday.

“I think we will have a big number of competitors on hand largely because of the inclusion of the high profile divisions which are always well supported.

“I am anticipating a strong roll up of V8 Dirt Modifieds as June 4 will see out their 2016-17 season commitments at Lismore.”

Meanwhile, the June 11 date, which will bring down another season of speedway racing at the historic Lismore Showground, will be rounded out with a massive fireworks display commencing at winter nightfall around 5pm.

Meanwhile Lander is well advanced with plans for the 2017-18 Lismore season.

The racing term will commence on Saturday, November 4, with the annual running of the V8 Dirt Modified Lord Mayor’s Cup.

Another big season is planned with major events for V8 Dirt Modifieds, Wingless Sprints, Super Sedans, 410 V8 Sprintcars, Speedcars, Production Sedans and a variety of support categories.

Next summer represents David Lander’s eleventh season at the helm.
