DRIVER TO AMERICA SERIES SET FOR MAY 5
BY DENNIS NEWLYN THE Wingless Sprintcar Driver to America Series Grand Final will now be held on Saturday night May 5 following the April 28 washout at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway. The upcoming meeting will be a very busy night for the Wingless division as the annual 100-lap Australian Wingless Sprintcar Grand Prix also will be held on the same programme. “We will run the final of the Driver to America series early in the night to give the drivers enough time between the two major races to prepare for the 100 lapper,” Promoter David Lander said. There will be a round of heats held before the 20 car-25 lap race to determine who wins the air ticket to America in the Lismore Workers Club Driver to America series. After the completion of the 25 lap main event another set of heats will be conducted later in the programme in the build up to the 100-lap marathon. By the end of the night Wingless Sprintcar drivers will certainly have done plenty of laps on the testing Lismore Showground bull ring. The top 20 point scorers from the premiership rounds in the series held at the Lismore and Grafton venues during the 2017-18 season have earned the right to race-off for the American air ticket. Michael Butcher was the top points man from the rounds and will start out of position one. Under the present format, the starting positions are determined by the point standings after the completion of the qualifying rounds. The highest in points starts at the front of the field and so on down the order to position 20 coinciding with the point standings. Late afternoon rain on Saturday, April 28 forced the cancellation of the fixture and the originally scheduled series grand final. A full support programme also will be held on May 5 with racing for Junior Sedans, Production Sedans, Street Stocks, National Four Cylinder Sedans and Lightning Sprints. The annual caravan demolition derby also will be featured to bring down the curtain on the major part of the regular nightly fixtures for the 2017-18 season.
