FUN DAY PLANNED FOR LISMORE SPEEDWAY, SUNDAY JUNE 11
BY DENNIS NEWLYN
KIDS’ push bike races, a massive fireworks display and oval track racing will highlight a day of family entertainment for the final meeting of the season at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway this Sunday, June 11.
For children to be eligible for their events they must bring a protective helmet in order to meet safety standard requirements. The season will finish as nightfall descends with fireworks lighting up the night sky. A spectacular sky show is planned not only in celebration of another successful season of speedway racing at the historic Lismore Showground venue, but also in keeping with the occasion of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
There also will be face painting for the kids as the fixture takes on a carnival-like atmosphere.
Hard core speedway fans will witness plenty of racing with ten different car divisions featured during the afternoon.
The highlight will be the Production Sedan main event held in honour of the late, great Grenville Anderson.
Anderson was a Lismore icon and is the only man in national speedway history who has won four major division Australian sedan titles. He passed away in 2004 from injuries sustained in a race crash at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway in the early 90s.
Production Sedan race officials report a strong entry list has been received for the tribute race. A series of qualifying heats will be held to determine the field for the final.
Wingless Sprintcars and V8 Dirt Modifieds also will be featured on the programme, while the support categories will be Compact Speedcars, Litre Sprints, Four Cylinder Sedans, Modified Sedans, Junior Sedans, Street Stocks and AMCA Nationals.
“This will be one of the biggest meetings of the season as far as the number of racing divisions on the programme are concerned,” promoter David Lander said.
“There will be something like 39 events on the race card, in addition to the other attractions we have planned for the afternoon, so the show will probably run through to around 6:30pm with the fireworks to end the season.”
Gates open at 11AM and racing commences at 1PM.
