HISTORIC MILESTONE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY SEASON

BY DENNIS NEWLYN

Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway promoter David Lander wants to ensure the Golden Anniversary 2018-19 season will be something very special in keeping with the venue’s historic milestone.

It’s not just the racing over the 16 nights – which commences on Saturday, November 3 with the annual V8 Dirt Modified Lord Mayor’s Cup – but also the landmark occasion the racing term represents and the place the venue holds in Australian speedway history as it clocks up 50 years.

With it’s half century, Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway rightly stands proud as one of the longest running, continuously-operating tracks in Australia.

This moment in time will be commemorated, celebrated, decorated and applauded with all of the major fixtures on the calendar playing a role in the 50-year celebrations.

Fittingly, this will be a season that will be like no other.

“In this day and age, it’s rare for a speedway in Australia to make it through to fifty years due to so many other outside influences and governing factors, so Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway really is a very special place,” Lander said.

With that theme, he is presently looking at putting together some social activities outside of the strictly racing Golden Anniversary celebrations that will also do the season justice and acknowledge November 22, 1969 when Lismore Speedway opened its gates for the first time.

“We will be looking at a few different things socially that still need to be finalised, but we are working every day on this. It’s not so much too early to make announcements of a social calendar of events, but we do need to talk with plenty of people to see what best suits the occasion in the area.”

The mandatory season launch obviously will take on greater significance this season.

The launch will also acknowledge the release of the Golden Anniversary Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway magazine.

All articles and editorial contributions have now been put on pages and a printing deadline is not too far away.

The content of historical material received has exceeded the originally planned 96 pages and it will be upward of 116-118.

The additional pages serve not only as a clear indicator of the magnificent response from people when the call went out for material, but also the huge interest in the Lismore speedway venue and its special edition publication.

“This magazine has come together very well because people in the Northern Rivers area love their speedway,” David enthused.

“Late last year we put a story on our website advising we had plans for a Golden Anniversary magazine and straight away people offered to email photos and newspaper clippings. It made the job of people like Graphic Designer Bill Roberts, Editor Dennis Newlyn and editorial contributor Warren King easier to fill the pages with words and photos.

“There is so much writing in this magazine with so many wonderful, in-depth articles. It will certainly be a magazine for the avid speedway collector, not only in Lismore but throughout Australia.”

Many of the major events for the respective racing divisions will be held over a 50-lap feature race distance in acknowledgement of the track’s Golden Anniversary season.

Keep watching this website and Lismore Speedway Facebook for further updates in the countdown to the 2018-19 Golden Anniversary season.
